IHA Press Release - Irish Mens Hockey Team Announcement of Training Panel
1st December 2004
Ireland's new National coach Dave Passmore has announced his first extended squad which will meet up on Sunday 19 December in Dublin and also travel to Spain in late January for a training camp. After watching the recent videos of this year’s international matches, the interpro tournament and meeting with the provincial and Irish under age coaches a 29 man panel has been named.
He has included 4 new uncapped players into the squad - Trinity's Phelie Maguire and Peter Blakeney, Banbridge's Eugene Magee and Richard Arnopp from Cork C of I. Four of the players who made their debut during the summer are also within the squad Iain Lewers (Annadale), Timmy Cockram (Lisnagarvey), Sean Nicholson (Cork Harlequins) and Pembroke's Ronan Gormley.
Mark Irwin has been named but is of course still based out in Australia until next year and David Smyth has agreed with Dave Passmore to take an extended break until after the Europeans due to work and other commitments.
A further nine players have been named as they have been added to the regional development group which will enable them to train with their national players in each region and continue to develop allowing ongoing assessment. Ulster - Johnny Quigley (Annadale), David Robb (Annadale), Mark Robinson (Lisnagarvey), Cork - Philip Smith (Cork C of I), Mark Ruddle (Cork C of I) and David Harte (Cork Harlequins), and Dublin - Joe Brennan (Glenanne), Eamon Bane (Aer Lingus) and Gareth Watkins (Monkstown). These players can be drafted into the squad at any time.
The Regional Development Group will commence training in January and meet up once a week and this will provide the opportunity for the players to train with the elite players in each region and assist in the integration of younger players in this forum which will all be conducive to increasing the player base at the senior level.
Dave commented: "I have deliberately gone for a young squad that has the potential to develop in both the shorter and longer term. With competition for places high, there can be no expectation from anyone to progress further in the squad if they do not commit to the program in place. The regional work should maximise the player’s ability to develop physically and technically, without impacting on their club training"
