Harlequins Cricket Match Report

Munster Division 2

Harlequins 2 beat Clonmel by 7 wickets

Played in Presentation College, Clonmel on Sunday 3rd August 2003

A much needed win for the Harlequins 2nd XI against, it must be said, against a nine man Clonmel. This is a very young Harlequins 2nds side, with an average age around the 20 mark. Our last win was way back in June against UCC, and a string of defeats – some of them very close defeats, it has to be said – had left morale a little low.

The Quins captain, Jono, won the toss and elected to field on what looked like an unpredictable wicket. All of the Quins bowlers bowled well and Clonmel were eventually all out for 64. Rogan Gee was the pick of the bowlers, picking up 3 wickets for 19 runs in his 9 over spell. Jim Burfield picked up 3 wickets for 1 run in 4 overs, all be it against the tail-enders. Billy Perrott and Richard Gash picked up a single wicket a piece. Donovan Gee and Jono finished wicketless. The extras count was much lower than of late and only one dropped catch – an improvement! Also, a must mention, another accomplished performance behind the stumps by David Gash, taking one super catch in the process.

The required total of 65 never looked in doubt for Quins, and it was reached with the loss of only three wickets. Richard Benson hit the winning runns with a four, and Jono was not out at the other end (more by luck than judgement, having spooned his first shot just over the bowlers head!). Richard Gash had previously scored over 35, before missing a huge ‘slash’ and getting clean bowled. Joe Murphy, playing his first game for Quins, and Rogan Gee both scored single figures.
