Harlequins Mens Hockey Match Report

Glenanne 1 Quins 3

Club Championships Playoffs

Saturday 16th April 2005

Scorers: D. Eakins 2, P. Lombard

Quins had a very good victory in this quarter final 1st leg tie in Dublin on Saturday. David Eakins opened the scoring in the 9th minute when his powerful flicked corner found the back of the net. Quins had most of the opportunities in the first half but had problems with their short corner routines & failed to capitalise on the chances created. Glenannes best opportunities were also from set pieces & Quins defended these very well to keep Glenanne scoreless in the first half.

Two minutes into the second half Richard Gash dispossessed the last Glenanne defender & attacked the circle at pace. As he ran across the goalkeeper, he was upended & a penalty stroke awarded. David Eakins had his penalty stroke very well saved by I. Clarke. Quins continued to attack & create chances & 11 minutes into the half the ever dangerous Richard Gash made the most of a half chance. His very determined run saw him beat a number of defenders before passing to an unmarked David Eakins & Eaks swept the ball to the net from close range. Soon after this Glenanne looked certain to score but Wesley Bateman dived & made a tremendous stick save to deny G. Shaw. Glenanne got back into the game in the 20th minute when G. Shaw scored a short corner rebound. Paul Lombard missed a great chance late on as he read a defenders intentions to play the ball across the circle but he failed to connect when well placed. However, a couple of minutes from time Paul did have the final say went he struck a fine low shot to the bottom corner with a well placed finish. This opportunity was created by the fast hands of Philip McLaughlin on the right wing before passing to Conor Harte & Conor in turn put Paul in on goal.
