Harlequins Mens Hockey Match Report

Pembroke Wanderers (A) 1 - Harlequins (A) 1 [a.e.t]

Harlequins won 4-3 on penalty strokes

Irish Senior Cup - Quarter Final

Saturday 15th February 2003

Scorers: P. Lombard (pen)

After another marathon, Quins came out on top in the penalty shoot out. This was a typical ISC game with both sides competing very hard for possession.Quins came out of the blocks quickly but failed to capitalise on the short corners & couple of decent chances that were created. Pembroke were posing a lot of problems with the speed of their counter attacks & took the lead with a spectacular reverse stick strike after 20 minutes. Quins had to dig in shortly after this when reduced to 10 men for a yellow card offence.

Into the second half & Quins having just been restored to a full complement had another player yellow carded. This meant a lot of hard work but the players managed to see things through safely & competed really well. Quins really upped the pace & quality of the attacks (when restored to 11 players) & were rewarded with a penalty stroke after 15 minutes of the second half, following a stick chop on Edward Gash in the circle. Paul Lombard successfully found the target to tie the game at 1-1. Chances were at a premium after that but Wes was called on to pull off a fine save from a short corner.

The extra time period was equally tight with defences generally on top. In the penalty shoot out Paul Lombard, John Hobbs, Colm Brady & David Eakins were successful for Quins with Wesley making a couple of great saves to put Quins into the semi-final.
