Harlequins Mens Hockey Match Report
Irish Senior Cup - Final
Saturday 5th April 2003
Scorers: R. Gash, P. McLaughlin
Quins just fell short in their determined quest for Irish Senior Cup victory. Quins started very strongly & created a number of very good scoring chances in the first 20 minutes. Eaks had a shot from play & a short corner both well saved by the keeper. Ducks also had a close in touch taken off the line by a defender. However, Garvey scored from their first corner & took the lead against the run of play after about 15 minutes.
In the second half Quins pressed forward from the off & were rewarded when Richard defected John Hobbs corner to the roof of the net. Lack of concentration from the restart was punished as Garvey scored almost immediately, when they were allowed a couple of shots, to edge ahead again. 10 minutes later & from their 3rd last corner Garvey, from a drag flick, went 3-1 ahead. Eleven minutes from time Locky gave Quins great hope when he touched home Paul Lombard's cross to made in 3-2. Quins threw everything at Garvey, but failed to gain the equalising goal.
Quins had 9 corners to Garvey's 3 but were only successful from one. Paul Lombard was the Quins man of the match & was followed closely by Sean Nicholson & Jason Black. The team gave everything they had on the day & were
just out of luck. The Quins support on the day was truly outstanding. Thanks to each & every one of them.
