Irish Club Championship

Saturday 20th April 2002

Scorers: D.Lombard (2)

Harlequins had an excellent victory in the first leg of the club championship quarter final on Saturday.

The early exchanges were balanced with two penalty corners for Harlequins in the opening 15 minutes.

A tense midfield battle was the order of the day until David Lombard opened the scoring for Harlequins in the 23th minute.

Winning the ball deep in his own half, John Hobbs found David Eakins, who picked out Edward Gash with a great pass. Gash exchanged passes with David Lombard before sending Ducks in for a well-taken goal.

The second half opened with a period of concerted pressure by Harlequins , with Garvey having great difficulty in getting the ball out of their own half of the pitch.

Harlequins increased their lead in the 53rd minute when Ducks showed great tenacity to rob the ball from a Garvey defender outside the circle before beating the keeper with a well placed shot.

In the 60th minute Edward Gash was very unlucky not to score when he flicked the ball over the keeper & saw the ball go a couple of inches outside the post.

Garvey forced their first penalty corner in the 66th minute but 'keeper Wesley Bateman saved superbly.
