IRISH MENS HOCKEY TEAM - BELGIUM TRAINING CAMP - (5 June - 9 June)
4 JUNE 2002

Following on from their victorious 100% performance in the Celtic Cup last weekend the Irish mens squad travels to Belgium as part of their preparation for the European Qualifiers next month.

The five day training camp will include two internationals against Belgium who were ranked 14th in the World Cup earlier this year and also a match against the Belgium u21 side. Four players have been added to the side which competed in the Celtic cup namely Cork C of I duo John Jermyn and Karl Burns and Glenanne´s Stephen Butler who were all unavailable due to exam commitments. Also, Corinthian´s goalkeeper Charlie Henderson joins the twenty one man party departing for Brussels on Wednesday who along with John Jermyn are the only two uncapped players.

After the three internationals last weekend the Belgian´s will represent a much tougher assignment and it will be the last opportunity for players to impress upon National Coach John Clarke before he names his 18 man squad for the Qualifiers. With the unavailability of Jim Kirkwood and Steven Hiles, Billy McConnell and David Judge will assist in coaching and managerial duties.

The Irish men have also a tournament in Manchester (14 - 16 June) where they will play England, Scotland and England B. Then the final preparations will be completed with a two match series against Scotland at Queens (Fri 28 & Sat 29 June) prior to the squad meeting up in Dublin on Friday 6 July.

The top two sides will qualify automatically for the European Championships next year with the third placed team then going into a further series of qualification matches before securing a place in the twelve team tournament in Barcelona (1 to 13 September 2003). It would be expected that Ireland´s main competition in the Qualifier would come from Wales, Italy and Austria for the top two places at UCD.
